Graduate Student Seminars

Presenting in this weekly student seminar is a good opportunity to take a step back, reflect, and put into perspective the research we spend so much time occupied with. Especially for students early in their research careers, formulating storylines and sorting out the central ideas for the sake of an interactive audience of peers can be a very useful and enjoyable experience. The audience of grad students and post-docs comes out of general curiosity, solidarity, and/or to enjoy the refreshments and socialize. There, they have a unique opportunity to ask questions more freely and about more unfamiliar topics than they may have during more formal talks. Newer students who are still in the process of choosing a research group can get an impression of what their prospective lives would be, from the most relevant people: other grad students. The format of the seminars is left entirely up to the presenter, but they often last between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the involvement of the audience, of which there is usually a lot. Every Friday afternoon at 5:00 (4:30 for refreshments).
