A new paper published in Nature Materials (see allied New & Views piece) by a collaboration that includes Prof. Chris Santangelo and former postdoc Arthur Evans discusses how topological considerations imply that certain origami-based structures called metamaterials cannot smoothly deform from one stable configuration to another. These ideas might make it possible to engineer more stable functional structures.
