Dynamics of black p-branes in the limit of a large number of dimensions
With the popularity of string theory and quantum gravities, there is now a necessity to study GR (more specifically, black holes) in dimensions greater than 4. In higher dimensions, certain types of black holes (what we call black p-branes) have been shown to be unstable, but the endpoint of their evolution is not known. I will review some work by Emparan et al in addressing the dynamics of the black brane, where the problem is simplified by doing an expansion of the Einstein equations in 1/D.
I will also talk a little bit about different ways of adding dimensions to the Schwarzschild black hole, different ways of taking the limit D to infinity, and some ways in which black holes in higher dimensions differ from the more familiar 4 dimensional case.
