Abstract:

How should we support emerging bilingual young learners to discuss their observations of and reasoning about the natural world? Policies, research, and common pedagogical practices tell us that English fluency is a prerequisite for participating in and learning science. In this talk I will use the construct of Translanguaging to interrogate that assumption and explore how emerging bilingual students problematize physical phenomena through leveraging a host of communicative practices. Drawing from studies in formal and informal science learning environments, I will show how elementary-aged emerging bilingual students leveraged their vast semiotic repertoire when co-constructing ideas. Based on the findings, I will propose theoretical and methodological contributions to the field, as well as conjectures for designing equitable science learning environments.
