First Ever Five-College Biophysics Research Slam!!!

Date:
Monday, December 19, 2016 - 8:30am to 4:00pm
Location:

LSL South Room 330

Join us for a scientific jam session designed to connect and engender collaborations between life scientists and researchers who develop and use biophysical tools, imaging techniques, physical measurement, and modeling.  The festivities will begin with breakfast at 8:30 am followed by short talks and posters in the morning. Lunch will be followed by break-out sessions devoted to grant- and project-planning.

There is NO FEE for registration, and meals are included, compliments of an ORD IIW grant.

Online registration has now closed.  Please contact lgoldner@physics.umass.edu to register.

A partial and preliminary list of speakers and posters has now been published.  See below to download.

Faculty are requested to please give a 3 minute "elevator talk" outlining their research interests and capabilities.

Students and postdocs are required to bring a poster, although more than one group member may present the same poster.

Tentative schedule:
  • Breakfast 8:30 am
  • Short talks begin at 9:00 am.

  • 10:45 am poster session
  • noon: Lunch
  • 1:00 - 4:00 pm discussion sessions

Afternoon sessions are primarily for faculty, and are aimed at identifying promising research directions, engendering collaborative grant efforts, and/or proposing additional workshops, or other steps necessary to improve graduate recruiting, advance research programs, or develop grant directions.

Proposed topics for afternoon discussion include cytoskeleton/cellular dynamics (Wei-Lih Li chair), microscopy and imaging, biophysical techqniques including force and AFM, biopolymers, protein binding and interactions, nanobiotechnology/single-molecule biophysics. Final choice of topics will depend on your input! If there is a topic not listed here that you would like to see discussed, please make a note on the registration form!
Confirmed sessions so far include:
cytoskeletal/cellular dynamics - Wei-Lih Lee, Chair
Microscopy and imaging - Lori Goldner

This list will be updated at least weekly.

If you are interested in chairing a session, please indicate so on the registration form.  Chairs will be responsible for pulling together a 1-2 page whitepaper summarizing the discussion.
